Hartzler Lumber Company is a retail building materials dealer that has been supplying the needs of homeowners and builders in Wayne County, Ohio since 1914. Prior to 1900, C. J. Miller and Simon Brenneman operated the "Miller and Brenneman" planing mill at our current location on South Summit street in Smithville. We have seen invoices from this company as early as 1883.
Miller and Brenneman manufactured doors, frames, window sash, blinds, lath, wood shingles, trim and furniture. They even made coffins, and Simon Brenneman performed undertaking services! In an 1897 business directory of Smithville, C. J. Miller was also listed as a manufacturer of cider and pure apple butter.
